Waking up in Madison, I enjoyed a fairly level 14 miles out of the western entrance of Yellowstone and into West Yellowstone, Montana!
Finally able to get cell service, I spent about half an hour looking up stuff and Eric and Will came rolling in right behind me. I hit the local bike shop and grabbed some spare spokes after Tyler broke one of his a few days back, figured I should probably have a spare or two. I then headed over to a real grocery store and grabbed some peanut butter, jelly, and bagels for my back-up food supply through Montana.
I had a gently downhill ride losing about 1800ft and awesome scenic views of the surrounding mountains to Ennis where I planned on camping at the fishing access. When I arrived to Ennis I stopped at the park and struck up a conversation with a guy who I eventually asked where was good to eat around town.
He told me that the town was having a pot luck picnic in memory of the mayor who passed away and his wife was one of the organizers who'd be more than happy to feed me as they had tons of food. I made my way over to the gazebo and introduced myself and was handed a plate and silverware and told to dig in. So much good food! And then they made me take one of each kind of dessert, I was sooo stuffed by the time i left and everyone there was so friendly.
This is when I decided I should make my way back across the bridge and to the fishing access to sleep. I turned onto the dirt road which took a sweeping right then a tight left and HOLY CRAP MOOSE! I hit my brakes and stopped about 10ft from a moose and it's calf in the road. The moose turned and looked me up and down, and I sat there frozen thinking "Oh great, so this is how I die..."
Thankfully, the moose didn't think I was a threat as she turned back and her and her calf walked into the woods. I sat there for about 10 seconds until they were a bit away before yonking out the camera and taking pictures. I continued down the path and met a group of 5 cyclists, all teachers, doing a week ride from Missoula to Yellowstone, so we hung out and chatted for a bit before it got dark and I threw up the tent and went to sleep!
